Some of my truest teaching hasn't happened in any session. It has happened in cold lake water at first light, where there is no performance to give and no one to be for.
Open water has a way of stripping things down. You can track your times and your distances, and I do — but the water is indifferent to all of it. What it asks is simpler: pay attention, stay steady, keep breathing. The same things, it turns out, that the inner work asks.
As this year slowly closes, that is what the wild places keep returning me to. Not achievement, but presence. The lakes don't care how well I'm doing. They only invite me to be here, fully, for as long as I'm in them.
